John MacArthur On Rob Bell (A Lesson for Arminians)

John MacArthur completed his short series of posts on the Grace To You blog and I must admit that his points are exception and why I enjoy his teaching ministry so much.  I don’t agree with Dr. MacArthur on all points but we agree on enough that I enjoy listening to him and do support him with money from time to time.  If he would come to a house church, I would gladly have him come and teach the Word.

In his posts on Rob Bell, MacArthur dares to do what others have feared doing and that is to say that Rob Bell is not even saved.  Bold words but he backs them up by showing that Bell is no friend to the Church but a heretic.  He shows that Bell’s views on hell are not a surprise to anyone who has actually been reading his past works.  MacArthur shows that Bell does not hold to orthodox views on many issues and that the Church of God would do well to simply avoid him as a false teacher (Matthew 7:15-20).  I was impressed to say the least.

Yet underneath was a lesson for Arminians to learn as well and that is that we too need to defend the truth.  We may differ with Calvinists on many issues regarding how we got saved but we agree on one thing: salvation is of the Lord (Jonah 2:9).  Our debate with Calvinists is not are they saved but is in the perimeters of our salvation.  I gladly call Calvinists my brothers and sisters in Christ even if we disagree within our salvation over how we came to be saved by God’s grace.

But even more sadly is that too few Arminians are willing to be as bold as John MacArthur and declare that Rob Bell is heretical in his views and is a wolf.  We should be bold and stand with Paul who gave his life for the truth of God.  He told Timothy to watch his life and teachings closely (1 Timothy 4:16) and he told Titus to teach sound doctrine in Titus 2:1.  The truth is worth dying for and we should defend it boldly (Jude 3).  The Holy Spirit will help us if we will remain in the teachings of Christ (John 8:31-32).

I pray that the Lord will help me to defend the truth of God.  I pray that I would be willing to lay down my life even for the truth of the Lord.
