Leighton Flowers Rebuttal to Tony Miano

Tony Miano, whom some of you might remember caused a stir back in the summer of 2015 when he basically said that Arminians are not saved if they hold to Arminianism and that Arminians worship a false god.  I called Miano’s hand on this as he had written in years prior to this while he was on staff with Living Waters (Ray Comfort) that Arminians were brothers and that we should not divide over this issue.  Miano had called Mark Cahill, an evangelist whom many in the open air preaching world know of, to repent for his statements that Calvinists worship a false god and that he would not associate with Calvinists.  I urged Miano to apologize to Cahill since he did just what he accused Cahill of. Instead, Miano went on to bash Arminians and even called for Dr. Michael Brown to come to repentance and true salvation (i.e. become a Calvinist).

After this, Miano took a “brief” hiatus from social media and blogging he said to get his thoughts together on this issue.  After a brief blackout, Miano is back on social media but not as aggressive this time it seems (for now).  Yet Miano did release the following podcast in which he attacks “the helpless god of free will religion.”  I have linked the podcast for you to listen to if you desire.  I listened to and sent it to my friend Leighton Flowers who did a podcast in which he offers a rebuttal to Miano and I believe Flowers does an excellent job.  I shared in Flowers assessment of Miano’s podcast, that it was not deep nor did he develop an excellent theological presentation to rebuke those of us who hold to free will.  Miano just builds his case against his own perceptions of what we believe and not does not interact with us nor our scholars.

My point here is not to stir the pot again toward Miano.  I think most Arminians simply ignore him.  I use to appreciate much of what Miano did.  I was an avid listener to his podcast, I supported him with money,  I prayed for him often, purchased his gospel tracts and though I disagreed with Tony here and there, I would have gladly preached the gospel with him in the open air.  That has all changed.  I still regard him as a brother though I don’t listen to him anymore, I don’t watch his videos, and I don’t support him.  I pray for Tony to repent of seeing us Arminians as enemies of the gospel.  We can disagree and still love each other.  I gladly would stand with any and every Calvinist in preaching the gospel to the lost.  I would gladly stand with my Calvinist friends against the enemies of the gospel of God’s grace.  While we can disagree let it be a debate “in house” where we regard the gospel as separate from our isms.  We can disagree how we are in Christ but let us praise the Lord that we are in Christ!

Romans 9, Predestination and Total Depravity

Here is a blog link to a great blog where the writer writes about Romans 9, predestination and total depravity.  Overall I am greatly impressed with his logic, exegesis, and his writing in general.  I highly recommend it.

This and That 10/5/15

We have had a flood here in the Columbia, SC area.  I live about 15-20 miles from Columbia.  We are safe, dry, and sound.  God has been good to us.  I am thankful for those who are praying for Columbia, SC.  The city needs revival.  I rejoice that many of the churches are reaching out to help people during this time.  The church where I was saved will be hosting the national Convoy of Hope (from the Assemblies of God) to pass out water.  I pray that the Lord will save many souls in Columbia, SC by opening their eyes to how quickly our lives can be gone.  People believe this flood is bad but they don’t know what awaits them if they don’t repent of their sins (Luke 13:1-5).

One of the best blogs on the Internet is from William Birch.  I highly recommend you read him everyday!  You can find his blog here.

John Piper’s sermon on the life of Athanasius is worth listening to.  Here Piper not only brilliantly explores the life of Athanasius but how he stood for truth when it seemed everyone was heading toward error.  It was Athanasius who defended the doctrine of the Trinity and helped save the Church from going into gross error about Christ and His deity.

Do you homeschool?  We do and I highly recommend the book A Fundamental Wesleyan Catechism by Andy Heer.  It is a good doctrinal study for children to learn about our Arminian faith.

The Society of Evangelical Arminians is a wonderful site.  You can spend hours reading about Arminianism at this site.

This and That For 9/23/2015

Just a few notes.

The Fire Bible is now out in the ESV.  The notes are Pentecostal but Arminian in their soteriology.

I did a review of Robert Tourville’s commentary on the book of Acts found here.

I recommend the blog Postmillennialism Today as a good starting point for studying postmillennialism.

And lastly, Dr. Norman Geisler will be the featured speaker at the Fundamental Wesleyan Conference this October.  You can find out more about the conference here.

Arminian Denominations Reactions to Same-Sex “Marriage”

I have been greatly blessed to see Arminian denominations coming out against the United States Supreme Court ruling in favor of so called same-sex “marriages.”  I first read of Dr. George Wood and the Assemblies of God releasing their statement against the ruling followed by the Church of the Nazarene.  I have also seen various fundamental Wesleyan and Methodist groups uniting against the ruling.  Other Pentecostals have released statements including the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), the Church of God in Christ, and the Pentecostal Holiness.

I pray that two things will now place in the Church.  First, I pray that we will now see the Church doing what she has failed to do and that is address many of these issues head on with the Bible.  We must address biblical marriages and what they look like.  We must address premarital sex, divorce, remarriage, and other issues with the Bible.  We must teach our children what biblical marriages are and shape the next generation so that when the next generations arise we will see this wicked ruling from the Supreme Court overturned.

Secondly, we must pray for a national revival.  Let’s face the facts that the reason that this ruling passed is not merely because of liberals on the Supreme Court but from years of wickedness building this up.  The Church has failed to transform this generation and the ones before her so that this event took place.  Having watched TV in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the homosexual agenda was in full view as Hollywood begin to shape the views of people in favor of homosexuality.  The Church should have been pleading with souls, crying to God for revival but we were asleep.  Many of us allowed these programs into our homes week after week that so indoctrinate our children into the homosexual favored view.

We need revival to sweep our land.  We need a move of God.  I long to see souls saved, for people to repent.  We have much more sins than just homosexuality in our nation.  We have all types of wickedness abounding all around us (Romans 1:18-32).  I was reading 2 Timothy 3:1-5 today and it is clear that the many sins there are abounding all around us.  We have been shocked at homosexuality but we should have been equally shocked by the rampant sins that we see each and everyday.  Greed, lust, pride, self-righteousness, lack of apathy, disobedience to parents, etc.  We have tolerated sin so much so that we have become shocked when sinners do what they do and pass laws to affirm their sinfulness (1 Peter 4:3-4).

Thank God for His sovereignty.  Thank God that He is watching over His Church and I know He will hear our cries.  The world is full of evil but we serve a King who is able to destroy all evils and bring about His salvation (Psalm 110:1).

Series of Posts on Two Arminian Books

I know other Arminians have been blogging recently on the new book from John Wagner entitled Grace For All but I want to throw my own review in as well.  I am working on a review of this for The Arminian magazine.

I also want to blog on J. Matthew Pinson’s latest book Arminian and Baptist.  This will be a challenge to blog on both but I pray that the Lord will give me grace.

I know the blog has slowed down some but this was on purpose.  I have been consumed with work and with family.  Both are good things.  The Lord knows that I love to write but I needed the break.  However, look for the new posts on the books to be coming soon.

Do Wesleyan-Arminains Believe in Inerrancy?

Here is a link to an article on the subject of inerrancy among Wesleyan-Arminians.  Dr. Vic Reasoner has written an excellent book on inerrancy called The Importance of Inerrancy.  It is an easy read on an important topic.

You can find the article here.

You can find Dr. Reasoner’s book here.
