Craig Keener Reviews MacArthur’s Strange Fire

Here is a very long book review by Dr. Craig Keener of Dr. John MacArthur’s newest book, Strange Fire.  I have not had the chance to read the book but plan to.  Dr. Keener is an excellent theologian who is likewise a charismatic and a teacher at Asbury Theological Seminary (an Arminian school by the way).

You can find his review here.

  1. That was an excellent article.
Not having read MacArthur’s book I can’t assess it’s accuracy as a review, but many times recently I’ve come across the same kind of claims as those attributed to MacArthur, so those cessationist ideas are clearly being spread around as a result of MacArthur’s conference and book.
It’s so ironic that a belief system that criticises charismatics for their focus on experience, is itself largely based on experience (or lack of it) rather than on a genuinely scriptural foundation.

    • Dr. Sam Storms said the driving force behind cessationists is not theology but fear. They are fearful of emotionalism, fearful of losing control, fearful of not being able to explain something that only God can do.

  2. It is odd to me that John MacAuthor says that the WOF movement is bringing division to the Body of Christ when he is the one bringing the division. By there fruits you shall know them.
