Important Points About Evangelism

I am close to completing a cross much like this one that brother Tony Miano takes out onto the streets.  My hope is to use this cross to draw people to me so that I can preach the gospel to them.  I also know that God can possibly use it to stir up other believers to evangelism.  It disturbs me that less than 2% (according to research) of Christians ever share their faith. How can this be when Jesus commanded us to go (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15; Luke 24:47; John 20:21; Acts 1:8)?  We are all called to be ambassadors for Christ and His kingdom (2 Corinthians 5:20).  We are told in Philippians 2:15 to shine as lights in the world.  Jesus said that He was the light of the world (John 8:12) and as we dwell in Him, His light shines through us.  People see our passion, our holiness, our zeal for the Lord and His kingdom, our submission to His absolute authority in all areas of our lives (James 2:14-26) and this draws them to investigate this Jesus who saved us.

As I wrestle with evangelism in my own heart, I have pondering these truths as of late about evangelism.

  1. Jesus Alone Saves (John 1:12-13).  A program does not save.  A gospel tract itself does not save.  Only Christ saves sinners who cry out to Him (Romans 10:13).  All who come to Jesus in repentance and faith can be saved (John 6:37; Acts 2:21).
  2. We must preach that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6) and that He alone is the mediator between men and God (1 Timothy 2:5).
  3. We must preach that the wrath of God abides on all those outside of Christ (Ephesians 2:3).  Only Jesus saves us from the wrath of God (Romans 5:8-9; 1 Thessalonians 1:10).
  4. ALL have sinned (Romans 3:23) and there is none righteous (Romans 3:10).  Thus none will go to heaven unless they are perfect before God (Proverbs 20:9).  Only those in Christ Jesus have their sins washed away (Matthew 26:28; Acts 2:38).
  5. To evangelize the lost, we must know the gospel ourselves and preach the gospel to ourselves (Ephesians 2:8-9).  Our salvation is completely dependent upon Christ and His cross and not our works of righteousness (Romans 10:4).
  6. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation (Romans 1:16-17).
  7. We must preach Christ and Him crucified above all other truths including sin (1 Corinthians 2:1-5).
  8. And always keep in mind that Jesus saves and not a preacher (1 Corinthians 3:5-9).
  9. And lastly, prayer is where we labor the most for souls (Romans 10:1; 1 Timothy 2:1-6).  Jesus taught us to pray for the harvest (Matthew 9:37-38; Luke 10:2).  Prayer is not asking God to bless our work for His glory.  Prayer is the work for His glory (Ephesians 3:20-21).

Noting profound there but simple truths that I need to preach to myself.
