The New Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan

Charles Spurgeon loved John Bunyan and he loved to read Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress.  I have tried to read Pilgrim’s Progress but struggled with the old English.  It is not a book that is too difficult to read but it is a labor and I will admit that I enjoy reading for fun so give me a book that flows quickly and not one I have to labor through.

That said, I have enjoyed Bunyan’s work that was updated by Judith Markham and features notes by Warren Wiersbe.  The book reads smoothly and the notes help make the reading a devotional reading.  Some critics believe that one needs to read Bunyan’s original work but Markham is to be commended for a fine editing job.  She does not take away from the story in the least bit.  I read the book, did not struggle with the English, and enjoyed the notes along the way that Wiersbe adds.

Someone once said that they enjoy reading dead men and women because then they can know they did not fail to live for Christ.  This is true of Bunyan.  What a great man of God.  What a great prayer warrior and lover of the gospel.  I truly appreciate this man and I agree with Spurgeon that if you could cut open Bunyan, he would bleed Bible.  The Bible flowed in everything he wrote and did.
